Frances Elizabeth Vita (Roupe), 1927-2014

Frankie and Georgie Girl

Frances Elizabeth Vita (Roupe), 87, of Somers, CT, entered into eternal peace Friday, July 11, 2014 at her home.

Born on June 26, 1927, daughter of Merle Roupe and Ina Roupe (Crecelius), Frances was one of six children raised in Eldora, Iowa. During her high school years, she was active and involved in nearly every club at Eldora High School. She was the Vice President of the National Honor Society, a member of the student council, co-editor of the school newspaper, cheered for the football team and was the co-captain of the girl’s basketball team.

After high school, Frances became part of the USO and it was during that time she met her husband and soul mate of 63 years, Hal A. Vita, Sr. Hal and Frankie, as he affectionately called her, were married in December 1947. After discharge from the U.S. Army in 1948, they moved to Connecticut to begin their family. In 1962, the Vita family opened the doors of the Shallowbrook Equestrian Center. A woman of amazing spirit and stamina, Frankie spent her life loving and caring for her family and helping to grow the family business. She and her late husband, Hal, spent a lifetime sharing their passion for horses, whether it was fox hunting, playing polo or teaching others. An accomplished horsewoman with a gentle touch, “Mrs. V” was a mentor to many young riders and instructors, including her children and grandchildren. Anyone who had the honor of being taught by her will always remember her gentle smile, soft-spoken words and never-ending encouragement.

While Frankie was proud of all of her life accomplishments, it was her family that she valued most of all. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother to her children, the best grandmother to each one of her grandchildren and completely in love with her great grandchildren. Nothing pleased her more than all the noise and busyness of having all four generations crammed into her kitchen. And just like her love of flowers and all their beauty, she loved to watch her family grow and blossom. Each one of her family members will carry a special memory of her in their hearts forever.

Frankie will be deeply missed by her entire family. Predeceased by her husband, Hal A. Vita, Sr., she is survived by her three sons, Joseph Merle Vita and wife, Laura, of South Carolina, Francis Salvador Vita of Somers, CT and Hal Angelo Vita Jr. of Ellington, CT; her two daughters, Angela “Pink” LeRoyer and husband, William of Edgartown, Ma, and Sally Anne Allison and husband, Geoffrey of Somers, CT, her former daughter-in-law, Kathy Vita , her fourteen grandchildren, Anthony and wife, Sarah, Jennifer and husband, Jackson, William, Jr. and wife, Jennifer, Dominic and wife, Abbie, Joey, Stephanie and husband, Jeffery, Hal, III, Logan, Molly, Mackenzie, Matt, Angelina, Johanna, and Asa; and seven great-grandchildren, Kaylyn, Boden, Sofia, Colin, Finley, Kieley, Elsie and her beloved dog, Georgie Girl.

A graveside service for family and close friends will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at Somers Center Cemetery.
